Sudan: The Forgotten War?

Bergen Offentlige Bibliotek

Om arrangementet

In April 2023 an armed conflict emerged between the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army; Sudan has once again become one of the worst war zones in the world.

Both the army and RSF are preventing humanitarian aid from entering the country, and the Norwegian government has stated that this war is set to become the world's biggest hunger disaster. Now 18 million Sudanese are suffering from acute food shortages and 730,000 children are in need of life-saving treatment, according to the UN.

Back in 2003, RSF was responsible for severe human rights violations against the civilian population in the Darfur war, which was officially ended by a peace agreement in 2020.

How is today's conflict related to the Darfur war in 2003? What is the background to the violence this time; what are the two military groups fighting about now?

And lastly: What does the future look like for the Sudanese population?
