This event is in English
What happens when financial markets gain increasing power over the economy and politics? Are elected representatives influenced more by the people or by finance? And what consequences does this have for the legitimacy of democracy?
Financialization refers to a process in which profits are increasingly generated through financial channels rather than through the trade and production of goods and services. In other words, financial markets gain greater influence at the expense of the “real economy.”
From an international perspective, how does this affect democratic institutions, governance, and political room for decision-making? Is this a consequence of the rise of neoliberalism? To explore these questions, we are joined by economist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, Ismail Ertürk, whose research focuses on financialization, financial markets, and political economy. We will also be joined by Professor Georg Picot from the Department of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen, who will provide a broader perspective on these developments through a talk on neoliberalism and asset-manager capitalism.
The talks and panel discussion will be held in English.
No prior knowledge of politics or economics is required. We’ll see you at Kvarteret on the 1st of December at 18:00!
