A Man of His Time

A MAN OF HIS TIME is the story of Henri Marre, an anonymous office worker serving the French Vichy regime during World War II. Swann Arlaud is brilliant as an everyman driven by the prospects of career advancement, effortlessly capturing the essence of what Hannah Arendt termed the banality of evil.

Rather than tell a simplistic story of resistance heroes and Nazi villains, director Emmanuel Marre (ZERO FUCKS GIVEN) uses his own great-grandfather as an example of how the quiet complicity of ordinary people makes the atrocities of authoritarian regimes possible. The film premiered in the main competition in Cannes, where it won the award for best screenplay.
