Despite a successful career that spanned six decades, Marianne Faithfull (1946–2025) was often reduced to the role of Mick Jagger’s girlfriend after they had a relationship in the late sixties. In this highly unconventional documentary, we follow the work of “The Ministry of Not Forgetting”, as it seeks to dismantle the many myths that surround Faithfull’s private life and career.
Much like they did in their Nick Cave documentary 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH (BIFF 2014), directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard mix fact and fiction to craft a captivating and enlightening portrait of a multi-faceted artist. In addition to letting Faithfull tell her own story, BROKEN ENGLISH features appearances by Tilda Swinton, Courtney Love, Beth Orton and the aforementioned Cave, who accompanies Faithfull in what would be her last public singing performance.
