On a summer evening in 1972, filmmaker William Greaves gathers artists, writers, musicians and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance – many of whom have not seen each other for decades – for a party at Duke Ellington’s house. As the cameras roam freely, the guests drink, laugh, reminisce and debate their legacy.

Completed more than 50 years later by Greaves’ son David, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM is a warm, vivid time capsule of Black American culture, which lets this remarkable generation tell their story in their own words.
